Amenger

Synopsis

Zhanat, a devoted village man facing a terminal illness, persuades his younger brother Arkhat and sister-in-law Altynai to return from the city to escape debt and danger. But after Arkhat dies in a mysterious car fire, Zhanat makes a controversial choice — to marry Altynai under the ancient Kazakh tradition of amengerlik (levirate marriage).

Their union shocks the village, sparking gossip and judgment. For Zhanat, it’s not love, but a final act of duty to his brother. For Altynai, it’s a choice between tradition and independence. Just as they begin to find fragile stability, the impossible happens: Arkhat returns.

Amenger is a powerful drama about duty over desire, tradition versus modernity, and the silent sacrifices made in the name of family.
